…How do we really
move? How does the simplest organism induce its own motion from within itself?
What is the Primary Cause of natural motion? Is it Aristotle’s Soul, or
Anaxagoras’ Mind, or Newton’s certain most subtle Spirit, or Leibniz’a vis
viva, or Kepler’s Anima Motrix? Will the cause of natural motion remain hidden
forever as Gassindi, Newton, Locke, Berkley, Hume and other great thinkers
believed? Is the cause transparent to the human intellect as Aristotle,
Descartes, Huygens and Leibniz claimed, but without proof? Will we know the
Ultimate Reality of Motion only in mathematical terms, as suggested by
Galileo, Newton, Fourier, Maxwell, Eddington, Einstein, and twentieth century
scientists? In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, will science be forever content
with abstract equations describing forms and sequences of shadows on the wall
of the cave and never see the ultimate reality in the bright light of the Sun
outside of the Cave?
The majesty of
natural motion can be greatly appreciated on seeing mechanical models, or
inanimate bodies, move on their own. I have had the delight to construct,
watch and feel many such models- - - without wheels, gears, levers, pulleys,
springs, or other common mechanical devices used heretofore.
I kept close watch
on the weather, just in case the lifeless models had a preference there. I
turned them north, south, east and west. I tried different times of the day
and night. I moved electric wires around. Also, I continued to analyze the
factors and conditions affecting the mysterious motion.
I tried the concept
on my body. I placed some models against my humerus, scapula, torso or other
bones, and in some cases I felt momentum (motion) imparted to my body: Without
command from Mind, Soul, Spirit, or any other incorporeal agent.
My findings show
the correctness of the Aristotelian definition and that living motion is
primary to physics; to the study of motion of man, horse, bird, fish,
electron, photon, etc.

Self-motion was a
central issue in Aristotelian physics. The subject has been generally
neglected for four centuries. The author discovered that self-motion can be
produced by dynamic coupling of two or more pulse trains within the moving
body. Changing the frequency or the amplitude of the pulses can change the

The mechanism responsible for living motions has been one
of the deepest mysteries. No one has been able to produce these motions in
lifeless bodies. The author discovered that coupling two or more mechanical
harmonic oscillations within a body or its parts could produce living motions.
He further derived the equations that govern the motions and constructed many
working models to demonstrate and verify the effect. In this paper, the author
describes the above findings and the steps that other researchers can take to
produce working models of motoneuron systems, or muscle motor units, that

The Mechanical Ultraviolet Catastrophe,
Force, Energy and Momentum

One hundred years ago, scientists encountered a strange problem in the
behavior of radiation, which was dubbed the "ultraviolet catastrophe."
It took nearly thirty years to settle the issue with modern "quantum
mechanics." In the 1980s, I projected that incredible speeds could be
produced with my Natural Motion mechanism. It took a lengthy effort to
recognize that I was dealing with a situation similar to the ultraviolet
catastrophe of one hundred years ago, which I call, "The Mechanical
Wave-induced-motion, produced by the superposition and modulation of waves
trapped in the bulk, reveals peculiar effects unnoticed before. Energy
seems not be conserved, momentum is not conserved, and two distinct forces,
accelerating and non-accelerating forces, are detected, measured and analyzed
in wave-induced-motions. Infinite speeds, which seem to be attainable from
simple mathematical projections, are simply not attainable. This paper
discusses the above problems.

Have you ever tried a Ouija Boardtm
or a similar game? Did you ever wonder what causes the plastic element to move
in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the applied forces? Have you
tried to produce similar motions with bodies made of steel, aluminum, brass,
glass, wood, or other materials? Have you tried to produce the same effect
with large objects, such as, a refrigerator? Is the motion caused by
innervation of your arms' muscles, or by innervation of the plastic element
itself, or by mysterious spirits, as Sir Isaac Newton wrote? It took many
years and countless tests to answer these questions.
Here I report how correct modeling of muscles' action led to the discovery
of natural, or wave-induced, motions and to the correct dynamic analysis of
the motions. Also, it is shown that the equal and opposite action-reaction
force pairs can no longer be discarded in evaluating the motion and
performance of biological and mechanical systems.
It is thus seen that the basic mathematical analysis of natural, or
wave-induced, motions is straightforward. The motion mechanism explains how
muscles directly convert pulse trains into motion, without ropes, gears,
pulleys or linkages. The antagonistic action of muscles, i.e., the ability to
push and pull, is also clarified with our motion models. The ropes and rubber
band models, used by other researchers, do not explain the antagonistic
- - -This finding greatly alters our understanding of the mind-body
interaction. To produce start-stop, start-stop motion of a car requires
repeated pushing of the accelerator (excitatory neuron action), brake
(inhibitory neuron action), intelligence (or computers), feedback circuits,

produce stepping, or rhythmic, motions; whether walking, breathing, heart

Human-Motion-Belts: These are self-contained belts with two
small motors, a battery pack, and a switch. Offset masses on the motors' shafts
produce mechanical pulses that innervate the muscles to induce forward motion of
the human body. The motors are placed near the hip joints, and when activated at
the proper frequency, the motors act as giant neuromuscular junctions. The

Patent Application, December 30, 1997
The present invention relates to a mechanism to produce natural motions, or
self-motion, of animate and inanimate bodies or of their parts. The mechanism
produces motion by coupling, or modulating, mechanical pulses that are
generated on the surface, or inside, of the bodies.
- - -The dynamic coupling or modulation of the oscillatory waves which
travel within the body, and which are caused by the pulses, produces the
desired motions. Here, energy is converted into motion in one step, i.e., turn
on the pulses, and motion results instantly.
To produce repeatable motion, fix the above parameters. To produce linear
motion, place the motors symmetrically on the sides, on the top, or inside of
the body - - -to increase or decrease the speed, increase or decrease the
frequency of the pulses - - -to produce stepped-motion, operate the motors at
different rotational speeds to induce different pulse rates. To produce
smoother motion, increase the frequency of the pulses or add more sources of
vibration to the body. To produce random motion, use malleable or elastic
The mechanism of this invention emulates living motions, and as living
motions can take on infinite gaits and forms, so can the mechanism of this
invention produce infinite forms of motion. Videotape showing sample motions

primarily using the two-symmetric-motors configuration or the Best Mode for

After the scientific communities’ experience with “cold fusion” in 1989
and AbuTaha’s experience with his Thrust-Doubler Invention in 1993 (see
Pulsing Thrust page), he was determined that every “motion model” moved,
every feature he proposed repeated, and all mathematical analyses completed
before he applied for a Patent. To avoid the terrible past experiences with
NASA, DOD and others, AbuTaha applied for a patent in December 1997 and, then,
took his “motion models” to DARPA in June 1998. This way, there would be
clear record about who was the first and sole inventor of “natural motion.”
At DARPA, AbuTaha demonstrated motion models to Dick Urban, Director of the
Electronics Technology Office (ETO) and Regina Dugan. It seemed that AbuTaha
went to the right office. Urban had a webpage on DARPA’s website, which had an
interesting “Ten Point Checklist For Getting It Off The Shelf.” Checklist
#10, which should be on everyone’s website, preached: “Be sincere,” “Be
honest,” “Uphold the highest moral(e) standards,” and “Set an
example.“ ETO seemed to be the best office to deal with.
AbuTaha invested a large sum of money on his invention for decades. What he
wanted from DARPA was straightforward. A Letter that he built “motion
models” that met the features described in his Patent Application and, if
successful, to move on to a Phase II Contract.
Notice in particular that AbuTaha made absolutely no reference or claim to
“levitation” or “antigravity” in his patent application, or his
extensive report “wave-induced motion” or in any write-ups submitted to DOD,
reputable journals, conferences or others. That was not done thoughtlessly.
Dick Urban and Dr. Dugan were impressed with the demonstrations of the motion
models. AbuTaha prepared and submitted a White Paper, and a Contract was
arranged to build, deliver and test 10 motion models (black boxes). A “black
box” was to house all components (motors, batteries, electronics, etc.)
internally. Turn on the motors, and the sealed boxes move forward and turn left
or right on command, with no wheels, gears, shafts or any external appendages.
The whole effort with DARPA’s ETO and Urban was done in less than six
The Urban-DARPA effort was full of irregularities and aggravations.
Urban would not execute a Contract between DARPA and AbuTaha, instead, Urban
selected a go-between Company, Walcoff & Associates, Inc. of Fairfax,
Virginia. Then, Urban introduced another company into the process, System
Planning Corporation (SPC) of Arlington, VA, and introduced Earl N. Powers from
SPC to provide support services. Then Urban required the motion models to be
remote controlled. Earl Powers had no clue what the invention was about, and
AbuTaha built all the models, every piece of every model. SPC is a
reputable hi-tech company with diverse capabilities, and the Contract required
Powers to build the RC and IR remote controls. Powers could not build these
either, and AbuTaha cannibalized toys to build his own remote controls.
On January 29, 1999, AbuTaha delivered 10 black boxes to DARPA. ETO required
that the models “must pass the test in < 20 trials (less than
20 trials). “All the remotely controlled motion models tested on January
29, 1999 succeeded in 1 (ONE) trial” Several DARPA people gathered to
witness the tests in the DARPA Building in Arlington, VA. The black boxes moved
down a hallway, entered offices, turned around in offices, moved over
thresholds, out of the offices and down the hallway. Some of the agency
personnel present expressed amazement at what they saw.
What happened next was bizarre. Dick Urban refused to see AbuTaha again and
would not respond to any calls or messages.
On February 10, 1999, AbuTaha sent an email message to Dick Urban and DARPA
“There is a long list of follow-up activities to show the great
utility of the motion mechanism in surveillance, fighting terrorism, in the
battlefield and other applications…”
Yes, fighting terrorism was important in 1999. Urban and DARPA did not
AbuTaha’s last email message to ETO on the subject, March 24, 1999, bluntly
“Did we achieve the basic “proof of concept” goal, i.e., dynamic
coupling of pulses can be used to produce controlled motion?”
No response. As described below, rather than put AbuTaha’s invention into
critical tasks, such as, “surveillance and fighting terrorism,”
Urban, DARPA and others were busy with fanciful profitable ideas: they were
trying to use AbuTaha’s natural motion invention to produce antigravity!
DARPA did not issue the Letter of Achievement that was agreed to before the
Contract. There was no Phase II Contract. Dick Urban, Earl Powers, and others
simply vanished! Rules, Regulations, Laws and Statutes and, even, Urban’s
DARPA Ethical Codes also vanished.
More bizarre things happened after 1999. Senior physicists from another
reputable national Center, Draper Laboratory, expressed keen interest in
AbuTaha’s invention. The interest centered on either sharing the Invention
with AbuTaha, or claiming the Invention outright with word manipulations, as
indicated in their written submittals. The reputable professional journals stood
by idle (see the papers submitted to the Journals in this webpage). All of
AbuTaha’s papers were rejected out of hand, and not one paper received the
By that time, AbuTaha could not afford attorneys and he did all the patent
legal work himself. That was a mess. The USPTO Examiner offered to give legal
suggestions, but only if AbuTaha abandoned his (December 1997) application and
started with a new application. Any idiot familiar with patent laws knows what
that meant. On average, it takes about 18 months to get a Patent. It took
AbuTaha’s 84 months to issue! The Congress had changed the Law for patent
rights, from 17 years from the date of issue to 20 years from the date of
application. Do the math. The Congress thought they did a great thing, but
AbuTaha’s legislators would not help to expedite his patent’s unusually slow
In 2001, AbuTaha saw CD video footage that was distributed at a hi-tech
Convention showing serious and expensive work based on his “Natural Motion”
mechanism. The CD showed “motion models” with substantially inferior
performance than what he delivered to DARPA. For example, the models moved at
about 0.3 cm/sec (yes, 3 millimeters per second) compared to models that AbuTaha
demonstrated to DARPA in 1997, which moved at 30 cm/sec (300 millimeters per
second, or 100 times faster). Who was behind the inferior models? Dick Urban,
formerly of DARPA and now with Draper Laboratory, Earl Powers from System
Planning Corporation, and others introduced to the invention by Urban. The fact
that AbuTaha had a pending patent meant absolutely nothing to Draper, SPC,
Urban, Powers or the DARPA managers and staff.
What came next was more surreal. Apparently, Urban, Powers, DARPA, SPC,
Draper and others thought in 1998 that they would outfox AbuTaha by using his
“Natural Motion” Invention, without telling him, to produce and patent the
Holy Grail of all inventions, Levitation or antigravity! That must have been the
real reason they ushered him out of DARPA and SPC and kept him away from Draper
after 1998. The “levitation” possibility must have excited the highest
echelons in DOD, NASA and anyone in, and out of, the government who heard about
it; and many heard about it.
What no one involved in this saga realized was that AbuTaha was one of the
premier investigators of antigravity effects in the 20th century. His
antigravity research goes back to the 1950s, and it involved his “natural
motion” invention and a long, methodical and expensive research into inertial,
gyroscopic, and other techniques. Ironically, senior DOD Officers were involved
in that effort twenty years earlier. AbuTaha hardly mentioned his earlier effort
to Dick Urban, Earl Powers or others involved in his 1998 Contract to build
motion models “to move on floors and carpets” for DARPA.
During the period 1984-86, AbuTaha demonstrated “primitive natural
motion” models to experts from NRL, NRO, DARPA, Naval Advanced Fighters, DDR&E,
other Centers and some defense Contractors. As described in AbuTaha’s
write-ups, the models moved randomly and erratically. Sometimes, the models just
wouldn’t move at all. When the models moved briskly (on the floor), everyone
got excited. There was no mathematics behind the invention or repeatability of
motion. But, motion was produced from within the body. A “mature natural

In 1985, some military experts wondered that since some models self-moved (to
the right in the figure), could the models be turned on their back to move
upward, to levitate - the antigravity device (see next figure). AbuTaha changed
the course of his 1980’s research and spent 7 years trying to make the thing
Trying to build the antigravity gizmo is exciting and can be addictive. If
done methodically, one can learn many things about how nature works. Useful
lessons came out of failures. AbuTaha invested heavily in that research, and
despite vocal encouragement, none of the DOD offices would chip in a penny.
There were talks to give him teams of scientists, engineers and technicians and
advanced machine shops at vital facilities to finish the Work, but nothing came
out of it. He abandoned the “antigravity” research and returned on his own
to the plain “natural motion” technique. It seemed logical to first learn
how to walk, before running. AbuTaha’s antigravity research collected dust for
25 years. Although he abandoned the antigravity research, the DDR&E Office
in the Pentagon would consult with him, into the early 1990s, about
announcements or analysis of antigravity breakthroughs from Europe, Russia and
elsewhere. After many flops, AbuTaha determined that “tendency” to move up
is not enough. He produced the “tendency” to move up many times. He set a
higher standard for success with antigravity. The real, physical, tangible and
corporeal body must take off from the ground alone.
Did Dick Urban, Earl Powers, DARPA, SPC, Draper and others produce
“levitation,” (with or without AbuTaha’s Natural Motion Invention) in
2001? The answer is NO. System Planning Corporation produced detailed, and well
formatted, mathematical analysis to show the possibility of levitation. That

wrong, he could not take a chance. He hurriedly prepared the lengthy report,
“wave-induced motion” (in this webpage), and submitted it to the USPTO to
defend his patent. The Report gives his detailed mathematics in classical
mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, biomechanics etc. The scope of
AbuTaha's invention went beyond anything Urban imagined. The invention was not
about black boxes scooting around hallways and offices. The Holy Grail of the
"natural motion" invention were "living motion,"
"quantum motion," and the unprecedented production of the low-pass
filter behavior in physical bodies. Urban was not even impressed when these
unique effects were demonstrated to him in his office at DARPA in 1998. He
was probably prematurely thinking about antigravity and "levitation."
Afterwards, AbuTaha did not hear of other attempts to hijack his invention. That
does not mean that infringement of his invention did not go “black.”
Of course, AbuTaha was furious at what happened from 1999 to 2002. He wrote
to the Director of DARPA, Senator John Warner and others. His appeals (as with
his pulsing thrust invention in 1993) fell on deaf ears. The Government
investigated, and dismissed, his allegations. The terrible events of 9/11 added
insult to injury. How do you convince the Administration that Arab-Americans are
as faithful as any other group in the Country? The people mentioned above and
the others involved in AbuTaha's other works are great physicists, engineers
and managers, and they made many contributions to the Nation and to science and
technology. But, that does not justify the actions they took. The same can be
said of the organizations involved.
If the above sounds like a fairytale, here is how Dick Urban, of DARPA and
then Draper, described what happened when he was a public servant, working for

I funded Ali AbuTaha a small amount to develop his concept and then
asked Earl (Powers) to help Ali build a robot and provide some
scientific analysis about how it worked. All this was about 3 years ago. After
the AbuTaha effort ended, Earl came up with the idea that he could use the
basic principle of counter-rotating weights to achieve self-contained
AbuTaha’s “concept” was fully developed before he first met Urban and
Dugan at DARPA on May 28, 1998, as the many documents in this webpage show,
especially, the official application for a patent dated December 30, 1997. "I...
asked Earl to... provide some scientific analysis about how it worked,"
wrote Urban. Urban, Powers, DARPA and SPC had no scientific analysis in 1998,
their engineering analysis in 2001 was wrong, and their attempts to duplicate
AbuTaha's motion models were inferior. Urban claimed that Powers came up with
the idea of “levitation” or antigravity, but that is irrelevant. Had Urban
checked with AbuTaha about “levitation” using the invention, AbuTaha would
have guided Urban to the record of the antigravity work in DOD. That would have
saved the taxpayer a lot of money. Sadly, managers from DARPA, System Planning
Corporation (SPC), Draper Laboratory and official inspectors fell for the sham.
As to the possibility of antigravity, AbuTaha will add another page to this
website to share his extensive research of the fascinating subject. Related to

Self-Motion Mechanism (Products)
These are self-contained belts with
two small motors, a battery pack, and a switch. Mechanical pulses innervate the
muscles to induce forward motion of the human body. The motors placed over the
hip joints act as giant neuromuscular junctions. The mechanical pulses generated
